Asperococcus J.V. Lamouroux 1813; 7 of 65 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Ectocarpales; Family Chordariaceae

Morphology:

Sporophytes tubular and attached with a basal holdfast, kholow, up to 50 cm tall and 2-20 mm in diameter. Unilocular or plurilocular sporangia. Gametophytes are microscopic (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).
