Name derivation:

Greek chnóos , “down; stuffing wool ”, and σπορα  / spora ,“ seed, in reference to densely packed branching filaments. Modified reference: Gérard Giraud 2021. Chnoosporaceae

 

Classification:

Chnoospora J. Agardh 1847;  4 of 11 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2017).

Order Ectocarpales;  Family Scytosiphonaceae

 

Morphology:

Thallus up to 4 to 5 cm high, with dense upward branches.

 

Similar genera:

 

Habitat:

Marine. Attached to substrate in upper intertidal zones exposed to wave action.
