Name derivation:

Possibly resembling sage? (sphakos = sage (Gr.)

Classification:

Sphacelaria Lyngbye in Hornemann, 1818: There are 169 species of which 40 have been taxonomically accepted

Order Sphacelariales, Family sphacelariaceae.

Morphology:

Uniseriate branched filaments with apical cell division. Multiple discoid chloroplasts have an irregular shape.

Similar genera:

None. Earlier genera (Taylor) such as Halpteris and Chaetopteris may no longer be recognized.

Habitat:

Occurs worldwide in marine environments. Can be found growing on rocks or on other seaweeds as epiphytes, and can be a nuisance fouling organism on ships and in mariculture.
