Name derivation:

Gr. psilo- naked, -siphon tube  (Ref. Gérard Giraud 2021)

 

Classification:

Psilosiphon  Entwisle  1989;  the only species description is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiy and Guiry 2013).

Order Batrachospermales;  Family Batrachospermaceae

Morphology:

Clumps of rigid, cylindrical, anodulate, sparsely branched thalli; olive-green to black. Thalli 14-33 mm long and 0.5-1.5 mm in diam. Uniaxial with profuse, loosely arranged, medullary filaments derived from basal cells of determinate laterals, and outer cortex of cells nearly uniform in size. Reproduction by formation of adventitious plantlets from cortical filaments and by production of erect axis from prostrate uniseriate filaments. Sexual reproduction unknown.

Habitat:

Rare genus, known from only two freshwater streams, one in New South Wales and one in southwest Tasmania, Australia. Humic, oligotrophic, pH <6, 16%C and specific conductance 80 μS cm-1. Autumn to spring (Guiry and Guiry 2013).
