Name derivation:

Furrowed disc:  Aulaco = furrow

Classification:

Aulacodiscus C.G.Ehrenberg, 1844. There are 42 species of which 27 have been taxonomically accepted (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Coscinodiscales;  Family Aulacodiscaceae

 

Morphology:

Discoid centric diatoms with 4 – 10 pronounced ‘processes’ around the periphery of the valve face.  The number of these conspicuous processes is related to the size of the cell, larger cells generally having more of them (Hernandez and Miranda 1994).
