Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Nereia  Zanardini  1846;  4 of 6 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Sporochnales,  family Sporochnaceae

Morphology:

Bushy erect thallus up to 35 cm tall.  Branches 0.3 – 2.0 mm diameter, with alternate or irregular branches that terminate with filamentous tufts 15 – 25 µm in diameter and 3 – 6 mm long.  Medullary cells of axes are colorless.  Unilocular sporangia are 10 – 20 µm in diameter and 25 – 45 µm long (Dawes and Mathieson 2008).

Florida, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Antilles, Gulf of Mexico, Brazil and Canary islands (Ibid.).
