Classification:

Phaeothamnion  G.Lagerheim  in Wittrock & Nordstedt  1884; 3 of 6 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Phaeothamniales; Family Phaeothamniaceae

 

Morphology:

Branched filaments of yellow-green cylindrical cells with one or more chloroplasts.  Zoospores are produced with heterokont flagella, that become sessile and produce new branched filaments.

 

Similar genera:

 

 

Habitat:

Epiphytic on filamentous alge in freshwater pools and small lakes.  Widely distributed.
