Classification:

Mischococcus  Nägeli  1849;  both 2 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Mischococcales;  Family Pleurochloridaceae

Morphology:

Mucilaginous colonies of spherical cells with one or many discoid chloroplasts.  May be stained with iron precipitate.  Zoospores have two unequal flagella.  Colonies are initiated from a single cell with a mucilaginous base anchored to a substrate.

Habitat:

Epiphytic on filamentous alge in freshwater pools and small lakes.  Found in Europe and Asia.
