Name derivation:

L. zizanium, darnel (weedy ryegrasses), cockle (weedy plant), Gr.

common name ‘wild rice’, ‘Indian rice’.

Classification:

Zizania Linnaeus;  three species are native to N. America, one to China

Z. palustris (Northern wild rice) – Boreal Forest biomes in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Z aquatica (Wild rice) – St. Lawrence River and Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of USA.

Z. texana – small area along the San Marcos River, Central Texas.

Z. latifolia – perennial native to China.

Order Poales;  Family Poaceae.

Morphology:

Graminoid growth habitat.

Freshwater; shallow water in lakes and slow-flowing streams.
