Pollen (Spermatophytes) |
|
Pinus (pine) pollen. By far the most frequently encountered pollen in lakewater (and lake sediment core samples), especially in basins within ~500 km of pine forests, due to enormous production and wind dispersal. Floats on lake surface as a yellow "cloud" resembling Microcystis blooms in June (N. hemisphere). "Mickey Mouse ears" are air bladders.

Another example of Pinus pollen.

Picea (spruce) pollen. Air bladders are more compressed against the pollen base than in Pinus.
