Classification:

Sphaerozosma  Corda ex Ralfs, 1 848;  12 of 53 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Desmidiaceae

Morphology:

Filaments of deeply constricted cells forming an isthmus.  Each semicell has a pair of rod-like processes at the end adjacent the next cell in the filament that are anchor points holding cells together.

Habitat:

Freshwater usually in somewhat acidic and oligotrophic lakes.
